Disclaimer: This craft it definitely more appropriate for kids who are older than 2 or 3 years old. I tried to do this with Sweet Pea. Really, I did. I set out the paint and egg carton pieces. However, she was more interested in painting the butcher paper. Oh well, we ‘parallel crafted’ and still had a blast. Once the egg cartons dried, I finished making the bunnies on my own with a hot glue gun. It was a lot quicker that way. If you do try this craft with your kids, you will want to use craft glue instead of the glue gun. I think the craft is super adorable either way though.

So, let’s get started!

Here is what you will need:

  • An egg carton. I think the kind made from recycled paper work better than the foam variety.
  • Scissors
  • Tempura Paint, paintbrushes, and something to hold the paint. We made white and pink bunnies but I suppose you could use any color that suited your fancy.
  • butcher block paper.
  • 2 white Pipe Cleaners and 2 pink pipe cleaners (to make the two bunnies shown.)
  • small googly eyes — 2 googly eyes for each bunny
  • small pink pom poms for the bunny nose. I used a pale pink color for the white one and a bright pink color for the pink one.
  • scrapbook paper scraps that match your color scheme. I have a ton of scrapbook paper left over from when I used to have time to do that (pre-kids). There are many varieties and designs of paper. If you don’t have any lying around, 1 sheet of scrapbook paper costs between 20 and 50 cents (or much less if you shop on sale) at any craft store.
  • medium-sized pom poms for the bunny tail. Again, I used colors that corresponded to the color of the bunnies.
  • a small strip of white cardstock for the bunny teeth
  • a black sharpie or craft pen
  • glue gun and glue (if you assemble the bunny yourself) or craft glue (if you are creating the bunnies with your kids)

Instructions for making the Egg Carton Easter Bunnies:

  • Cut individual pods out of the egg carton. I used kitchen shears and they worked just fine. You might need to trim the pods so that the bunnies will be able to sit on a ledge. However, take care not to cut too much or you won’t have room to glue the tail and ears onto the back of the bunny body.
  • Let the paint dry.

  • For the bunny face:
    • Cut one pipe cleaner in half. Then cut one of the halves into four small parts for the whiskers.
    • Apply glue (hot glue gun or craft glue) to the middle of the egg carton face and then stick on the four whiskers. Note: It is likely that your egg carton will have one ‘face’ that is bigger. Use this for the bunny face (the bigger face will likely be the wall of the pod that faced out on the egg carton).
    • Apply more glue to the center of the four whiskers and then stick on the smaller pom pom for the nose.
    • Apply glue and stick the two eyes onto the face of the bunny as desired. (I suppose you could go for the Picasso bunny look, but I stuck with symmetrical eye placement. ha!)
    • For the buck teeth, cut a small ‘half oval’ out of the butcher block paper. Draw a thin black line down the center of the oval lengthwise. Apply a small amount of glue under the nose and then stick the teeth on. The nose will cover up the top of the teeth. Note: Since I used the hot glue gun, these steps took less than 10 minutes. I imagine if you use craft glue, you might have to wait for the glue to dry on the whiskers or nose before applying the teeth.

  • For the ears and tail:
    • Cut the second pipe cleaner in half.
    • Bend each half of the pipe cleaner in half, making a loop/bunny ear shape.
    • Place the bunny ear onto the scrapbook paper and trace the bunny ear outline on the paper with a pencil. This does not have to be exact. Cut out the bunny ear backs.
    • Glue the pipe cleaner loop to the scrapbook paper bunny ear back. I think this step is definitely easier with a hot glue gun. Also, you will want to make sure your bunny ear back corresponds to the pipe cleaner loop you used to trace it. From my limited experience, each pipe cleaner loop shape will vary slightly.
    • Affix each finished bunny ear to the back of the egg carton. You may need to play around with placement to ensure your bunny looks the way you intended.
    • For the tail, apply glue to the bottom of the back of the egg carton and stick on the medium-sized pom pom.

  • For the legs:
    • Take the unused pipe cleaner half (the other half was used for the whiskers) and cut it in half.
    • Glue one end of each pipe cleaner to the inside of the front/face of the egg carton.
    • Cut two small pieces of paper (I used leftover scrapbook paper scraps but you can use anything) and glue each one on top of the ends of the pipe cleaner (see below). This serves as reinforcement for the legs. Again, I really think you will save yourself much grief by using a hot glue gun for this step.
    • Cut out a small oval from the same scrapbook paper used for the ears. Cut it in half to make the feet/paws and glue each paper half to the other end of the pipe cleaner for the paws.
    • Bend the pipe cleaners so that your bunny’s legs look the way you want.
