Watercolor Flower Bouquet Craft for Kids

“Why do something simple when you can do something hard?”— said no mother EVER! However, sometimes you just don’t realize how easy and fun ‘something’ is, until you try it. Well, perhaps you can call this a ‘craft hack.’ A few weeks ago, Sweet Pea and I discovered how absolutely delightful it is to paint with watercolors! Before now we had painted mainly with tempura and acrylic paints. You know, the paint that requires a full body smock, vigorous hand washing, and endless hours of drying time? By contrast, watercolor painting hardly makes a mess at all, dries quickly, and wow… the crafts you can create with watercolors are so sweet and whimsical. Check out this watercolor flower craft for kids we made recently. Isn’t it precious?

Watercolor Flower Craft for Kids

Materials Needed

  • 1/2 of an egg carton
  • Acrylic paint colors of choice. We used two colors: purple and pink
  • White cardstock
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint containers/container for water
  • Dark colored marker or sharpie
  • Scissors
  • Toothpicks (colored toothpicks if you are getting fancy)
  • Buttons that color coordinate with your flowers
  • Craft glue
  • Play Doh

How to Create this Craft

  • Cut an egg carton in half so that you have two rows of three ‘pods’.

  • Paint the egg carton ‘flower pot’ and let it dry
  • Using the dark marker or sharpie, draw the petal part of at least six flowers on the cardstock. It is not necessary to be exact about this. The flowers will actually look super cute if their shapes and sizes are not uniform. You can also draw more flowers than you will need, so that you can choose the best and save the rest for another project!
  • Have fun painting the flowers! This part was really a great way to connect with my daughter. We talked about which colors went together well, the types of paint strokes we could use, patterns we might like, etc… I painted with her. It was certainly more fun for both of us that way!
  • After you are done painting the flowers, cut the flower petals out. It adds a nice touch to keep the outline of the sharpie/marker intact.. but that is clearly your preference.

  • Sort your buttons and find buttons that coordinate with each of the flowers. Glue them to the center of the flowers.
  • Glue the toothpick to the back of the flower, leaving enough toothpick overhang that it makes a nice stem. Let the glue dry.
  • Once the egg carton flower pot dries, break off enough playdough to fill each of the egg pods at least 3/4 of the way full.
  • Once the stems and centers of the flowers are dry, stick them into the Play Doh.

There you have it! Isn’t this flower bouquet so pretty? This would make a great teacher gift or Mother’s Day gift.
