Bunny and Chick Crafts for Kids

This little craft was a 2-part project and Sweet Pea helped with part one (the painting). Depending on the age and skill level of your kids, they could easily do more of this craft. However, Sweet Pea needed a nap after a morning Easter Egg hunt (oh, glorious nap), so I finished them for her!

What you will need for this craft:

(contains affiliate links for your convenience)

  • Jumbo Craft Sticks (one for each craft you make)
  • Pink and Yellow Paint (I used Crayola Washable Kids Paint)
  • Paintbrushes and shallow bowl to hold the paint
  • googly eyes
  • Either pink cardstock or pink felt
  • Either yellow cardstock or yellow felt (I made the bunny with cardstock and the chick with felt so you can see the difference)
  • small pink pom-poms for the bunny nose
  • small piece of orange felt (or cardstock) for the chick beak
  • yellow feathers
  • black sharpie
  • 1 small piece of spaghetti or angel hair pasta
  • 1 each– very small pink and yellow buttons
  • 3 each– small pink and yellow buttons
  • craft glue
  • scissors
  • wax paper
  • butcher block paper or something to cover/protect your work area.

Instructions Part One:

  • Prep the paint, craft sticks, and painting area with butcher block paper or another cover to protect your table.
  • Don that smock!
  • Paint each craft stick on one side only. Sweet Pea pretty much did all the painting, and then she moved on to paint the butcher block paper.
  • Let the craft sticks dry.

Instructions Part Two:

Tip: I found it helpful to assemble/position the bunny and chick pieces onto the craft sticks before gluing, just to ensure everything looked the way I wanted.

  • Cut out the animal parts.
    • For the chick, cut a small triangle from the orange felt/cardstock for the beak. Cut a lazy ‘W’ (or three-fingers) shape from the pink felt/cardstock for a feather-like ‘hat.’
    • For the bunny ears, cut two small outer ears out of the pink cardstock/felt. Trim the ears until they are proportional to the craft stick. Use the outer ear as a rough guide to trim a symmetrical but smaller inner ear in yellow cardstock/felt.
  • Glue the inner bunny ear to the outer bunny ear. Apply a thin layer of glue to the back, top of the pink-painted craft stick and stick the entire ear piece onto the back of the craft stick. You may need to play with the ears to get them where you want them.

  • Apply a thin layer of glue to the back, top of the yellow-painted craft stick and stick the pink ‘feather’ hat to the back of the craft stick.
  • Apply two thin layers of glue to each side of the back of the yellow-painted craft stick about 1/3 of the way down the craft stick. Stick the yellow feathers to the back of the yellow craft stick.

  • Apply two small glue dots about 1 1/2-2″ down from the top of each craft stick for the eyes. Stick the googly eyes onto the craft stick.
  • For the chick craft stick, apply one small glue dot under the eyes and stick on the orange chicken beak.
  • For the bunny craft stick, break four small (about 1 1/2″ for each piece) pieces of angel hair pasta or spaghetti. Ensure the pieces are approximately the same size, although there is no need to be exact. Use the sharpie to ‘color’ each pasta piece.
  • Apply a fat glue dot under the eyes. Stick each black ‘whisker’ into the glue dot and arrange them to your liking.
  • Apply a second fat glue dot on top of the whiskers and stick the pink pom pom on top of the whiskers for the bunny nose.

  • Cut out the bow tie for each craft stick from either the felt or cardstock. Take a small piece of cardstock or felt, fold it in half and then cut a triangle with a wide top in order to form a symmetrical bow tie. I made the bunny a yellow bowtie and buttons to match the chicken. I made the chicken a pink bowtie and buttons to match the bunny.

  • Apply a small glue dot under the chicken’s beak and the bunny’s nose and stick the bowtie onto the craft stick.
  • Stick the very small pink button onto the pink bowtie with glue. Stick the very small yellow button onto the yellow bowtie with glue.
  • Under the bowtie, stick 3 small buttons onto the craft stick with glue. These buttons should be bigger than the buttons used for the bowtie, but not much bigger.
  • With the sharpie or another fine-tipped black marker, add eyebrows and lashes to the bunny and chick.

And that is that! Didn’t these little guys turn out so cute?
