Mother’s Day Crafts for Kids: Bottle Stamp and Button Tote Bag

What you will need:

  • White or beige canvas tote bags.
  • Acrylic paint. The colors  we used were purple, yellow, pink, and green. Tip: You can get super small bottles of acrylic paint at Wal-Mart for about 50 cents (or less if they are on sale). I recently stocked up so I could experiment with colors in projects like this.
  • One 20-ounce soda for each flower color you will use. Finally! An acceptable excuse for my soda addiction!
  • White paper/cardstock (for painting/stamping practice)
  • A small paint brush (for the stems)
  • Small paper plates or paint dishes for each of the paint colors.
  • Assorted colors and sizes of buttons.
  • Hot glue gun and glue.

How to make the bags Part I:

  • Get set up before the craft actually starts. Ok, I was a little worried about this part because Sweet Pea and I have never crafted with acrylic paint. To ensure there weren’t lingering stains on our clothes, or the floor, I had a small bowl of water and some paper towels handy for clean up.
  • Stick one soda bottle into each color of the paint.
  • Have your toddler practice stamping on a piece of paper before you try stamping on the bags. This activity is fun in and of itself.

  • When you are ready to stamp the real deal, I would suggest working on one bag at a time. Coach your younger toddler (older toddlers and preschoolers are probably fine to create their own color scheme) where to stamp each color to make flowers. I tried to have Sweet Pea stamp in the middle of the bag (to allow room for the stems).
  • After each color is stamped/painted on 2-3 times, go back and layer the flowers with a second color. To get the best effect, rotate the soda bottle so that the prongs line up with the space in between ‘petals’ from the first color. This is actually a pretty neat effect!
  • When you finish with one bag, start on the next.. and so on.
  • After all the flowers have been painted, take a small paintbrush and add stems. Just to experiment, I made two bags with actual stems, and 1 bag with just the top part of the stem.
  • Let the bags dry.
  • Note: My 2-year old did not last this entire craft. She had fun painting.. but it was the end of the day and she just wanted to play. The craft doesn’t take a long time, but since it is more directed than process art (mostly because we are giving the bags as gifts… so they kind of have to look pretty), it didn’t hold her interest as long.

How to Make the Bags: Part II

  • Ok, I am not going to lie. I did not involve my daughter in this part. Small objects and a hot glue gun do not tend to mix well.
  • If I were to involve her, it would be to pick out the buttons we used.

  • Either way, sort through and find buttons for the center of the flowers. I tried to color coordinate with the painted flowers, but you really don’t have to.
  • Hot glue the first layer of buttons onto the center of each flower.
  • Pick out smaller buttons, in a different color, for additional cute flower flair.
  • Hot glue the smaller button onto the larger button.

That is it! Didn’t these bags turn out great?

I would say Part I took about 20 minutes from set up to clean up. Part II took about 15 minutes.. once I found the buttons I wanted to use.
