Materials Needed:

  • Cheap wooden craft picture frames (Without buying on sale, these frames will cost $2-$3. However, watch the sales and you can stock up. I snagged a stack of them for $1 each frame.
  • Corks, one per paint color
  • Acrylic paint in three or four colors of choice
  • Something to put the paint in

How to Make the Picture Frames

  • Ok, this craft is ridiculously easy. Squirt a large dollop of paint onto your paint palette of choice. I used a mini muffin tin, but you could seriously use anything… even a paper plate.

  • For paint colors, limit it to three or four colors. We chose dark purple, light purple, yellow, and brown because those colors match the outfit Sweet Pea wore for her school pictures this year. If you want complementary colors, maybe use similar colors in different shades. Of course, I really have no idea what I am talking about. This just worked for us. Then again, this is the easiest craft ever, so….

  • Use one cork per paint color to paint the wooden picture frame. Sweet Pea didn’t get it at first so I had to show her how to ‘stamp’ the cork on the picture frame instead spread the paint like with a paint brush.

  • Let the paint dry. (If you are wondering why we used a little red… Sweet Pea saw it and I let her drive the color train. However, we didn’t like how it worked out so we used just a ‘splash’ of red. Ha!)

There you have it! These frames would make a great handmade gift your kid could make for a grandparent, for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, or for any occasion. Just add a picture!

PS– if you want to decorate the frame with the ‘place holder’ picture I used, that is super easy too. Just measure and cut a piece of light-colored cardstock, punch out a heart from cardstock (I used the heart shapes left over from this craft), and tape the heart to the piece of cardstock.
