Stained Glass Black Glue Craft For Kids

Recently, I have discovered the joy that is crafting with Black Glue. So, of course I had to share this new obsession with my daughter. We decided to create these lovely Stained Glass Black Glue Craft Windows and I think they are incredibly beautiful. Read on to see how we made them. They are surprisingly easy and ridiculously fun to make together!

What You Need to Make the Stained Glass Windows

Clear Craft Plastic Sheets
Sharpies. Lots of Sharpies in many different colors
White Butcher Block Paper
Double Sided Tape
Elmer’s Glue
Black Acrylic Paint
Any type of stirrer or wooden dowel

How to Make the Stained Glass Windows

First, you need to make black glue! The easiest way for me to tell you how to make black glue is to show you how to make it… but it is a pretty easy (and addicting) process. This video is the best tutorial I have found for making black glue.

After you have made your black glue, cover you work surface with white butcher paper. You will want to use white specifically so you can see your design as you make it.

Place one clear plastic on the paper and start creating your design. This is such a fun and creative process. Trust me, I am not a great artist but I was still able to make a lovely flower garden, exploding hearts, and a more typical stained glass window design.

My daughter even created her own design, which she loved!

Tip: If you want you can trace your design before you outline it with the black glue. I didn’t but my designs were really simple. To do this either draw free-hand with a black sharpie onto the plastic sheet and then follow with tracing the design using black glue. Or, you can draw your design on a sheet of white paper (using pretty much anything– pencil, pen, crayon). Then, simply slide the drawing under the clear plastic sheet and use that as your guide for tracing the design in black glue!
After you trace your design with black glue let it dry. It probably won’t take an entire day, but if you set the craft aside for a day (or overnight) you should be good to go. I did experiment with speeding up the drying process with a blow dryer.. that didn’t work as well as I wanted because the glue started bubbling.

Once the glue is dry it is time to color!

There is really no right or wrong way to color in your stained glass window panels. However, here are a few pointers:
- The more densely you color, the more the windows will pop.
- If you don’t color densely, the windows are still lovely (see the heart window for proof of that).
- Avoid using windex to fix an mistake because for some reason that will make it really hard to color with the sharpies.
- Sharpies really are the best markers to use. I also tried other craft markers and they didn’t work at all.
This is the perfect craft to do with your kids.. it is such a fun and easy process!

To hang the stained glass windows, apply double-sided tape to each of the corners of the panel and then stick onto any window you would like! We tried the front door and then settled on the sliding glass door to the backyard.
